Morgan, pioneer descendant and head of the Utah State Historical Society, created maps of Salt Lake city, circa 1853, showing property owners based on what records were available. Ronald W. Andersen redrew the map and corrected names based on biographical research in 2010-12. 1871-2 plat map (right image). The U.S. Government established a land office in the territory of Utah in 1869. Land ownership certificates were issued in 1871-1872 and summarized on block maps of Plat A by name, claim number, and date certificate was issued. (This record is available at the Utah State Archives, Plat Books, 1871-1968. 4044. Book 16.) It can be assumed that most of the owners were living on the property in 1870 which the Salt Lake model depicts. Some property may have been rented and some may have been sold between 1870 and 1872. For purposes of this model, however, these names were by-and-large the people that lived on the property in 1870, as declared by the Probate Court for the date shown on each piece of property. An overhead photograph of each block and the location of each block in the model are included. Property lines on the plats of each block do not necessarily line up exactly with property lines indicated by fences on the photographs of the model. Reasons for discrepancies include: 1. Many property owners sub-divided their lots for rentals, businesses, or for multiple families. Although the plat book shows only one owner for a piece property, the photographs of the model may show that it had been broken down into smaller parcels. 2. The plat book was intended for general record keeping and not to record exact property lines which were found on the deeds. 3. There may be inaccuracies on either the model or in the plat book.
